Bishop Scott left Cardinal Gregory’s audience without the support he wanted and flew the polar route directly back to Portland. He’d been delayed in Spain by a bomb threat, that had shut down the airport and, as he sat, he felt his precious time slipping through his fingers while Jack tried to find some other way out and back to Oregon. But, they were unable to get out until late that evening.

The Bishop had tried to sleep on the flight, so he’d be rested when he finally got home. However, jumping back several time zones from Europe to Oregon left him arriving in Portland four hours earlier than when he’d boarded the plane in Toledo, and ten hours later than he’d planned.

By the time he reached Clement’s office for a private hearing he was short tempered and tired. He wanted to get home, get showered and caught up on some of that sleep he missed, and when he woke he wanted to be told his plan was already well underway.
